Derby...Party of One. I Stopped Indoors for Two-Minutes to See a Race I Didn't Bet On, But Know...We're One Step Closer to Normal

It started out cold...this Saturday. We still had winds, so I graded, but then I found a way outside to rake, prepare flower beds, to power wash the back porch, to weed-whack, and to walk Jake. I came home just in time for the Derby, which didn't exist last year (that's two years without a party) and I was good to go. I prepared sweet syrup and mint earlier in the week and thought, "Dang, if no one is going to join me, I'll celebrate on my own".

My Aunt Bobbie called, which was nice - always a Kentucky connection, and we caught up on West Coast / East Coast shenanigans, and I was just thankful the horses were running again, and traditions continue. Didn't look like 6-feet distancing to me, but c'es la vie...let the horses run and the people enjoy the race, especially in the infield.

I'm now in love with power washing and want to buy myself my own apparatus (as I borrowed my neighbors and was super impressed by the results. Today, I will plug in wood holes on the back patio, and once the plugs dry, I will begin to paint the back porch before I get out my patio furniture.

I'm also thinking it's safe enough to get annuals, as the perennials are popping out, I raked the flower beds, and I'm ready for backyard barbecue season, colors, and the shenanigans that come with Mt. Pleasant summer.

I will say, however, that the mint juleps were delicious and although I am fasting with Abu and Lossine (while they're in Syracuse), I made an exception for the race (and following with Kris and Dave) with the drinks.

By 10 p.m. I finally ate. A delicious day, but no poem to follow. That April season has ended, and I'm sort of sad...I've liked tapping my creative side this past month each morning.

...but come what May.
